Delivery Tip Calculator

For food delivery, tip 15-20% of your order total with a minimum of $3-5. Your delivery driver uses their own car, pays for gas, and brings food directly to your door — their tip is a significant part of their income.

Food delivery drivers depend heavily on tips. Unlike restaurant servers who earn a base wage plus tips, many delivery drivers for apps like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub earn a minimal base pay per delivery. Your tip often makes the difference between a livable wage and not.

The standard delivery tip is 15-20% of your order subtotal, with a minimum of $3-5. For orders under $20, the minimum matters more than the percentage — a $2 tip on a $12 order is only 17%, but it is not enough to justify the driver's time and gas.

Tip more for: large orders (especially multiple bags), long delivery distances, bad weather (rain, snow, extreme heat), apartment buildings where the driver has to find parking and walk, or late-night deliveries.

Remember that delivery fees paid to the app do not go to your driver. The tip is separate and goes directly to the person who brought your food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do delivery drivers see the tip before accepting?

On most platforms, drivers see an estimated payout (which includes the tip) before accepting. Low-tip or no-tip orders may be declined by multiple drivers, causing longer delivery times for your food.

Should you tip in the app or in cash?

Either is fine. In-app tips are convenient and guaranteed. Cash tips have the advantage of going directly to the driver tax-free, and some drivers prefer them. Pre-tipping in the app ensures faster delivery acceptance.
